Artist's Description

Northern lights also known as Aurora borealis are the result of disturbances in the magnetosphere caused by solar wind.

These disturbances are sometimes strong enough to alter the trajectories of charged particles in both solar wind and magnetospheric plasma.

Most auroras occur in a band typically 3° to 6° wide in latitude and between 10° and 20° from the geomagnetic poles.

'Aurora borealis', the lights of the northern hemisphere, means 'dawn of the north'. In Roman myths, Aurora was the goddess of the dawn.
