Description
The poppy dates back to the New Stone Age.
Discoveries of poppy cakes made in pile dwellings in Switzerland let us assume that even at that time culture and possible employments of poppy were known very well.
Homeland of poppy is the barren plateau of Persia. Along with the first seed wheat, poppy came to Europe centuries ago.
Poppies have long been used as a symbol of sleep and death: Sleep because the opium extracted from them is a sedative, and death because of the common blood red color of the red poppy in particular.
In Greek and Roman myths, poppies were used as offerings to the dead.
Poppies used as emblems on tombstones symbolize eternal sleep.
