Description
Zambia is a landlocked country in south-central Africa with a tropical climate, and consists mostly of high plateaus with some hills and mountains, dissected by river valleys, neighbouring the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north, Tanzania to the northeast, Malawi to the east, Mozambique to the southeast, Zimbabwe and Botswana to the south, Namibia to the southwest, and Angola to the west.
Zambia is drained by two major river basins: the Zambezi/Kafue basin in the centre, west and south covering about 3/4 of the country; and the Congo basin in the north covering about 1/4 of the country.
A very small area in the northeast forms part of the internal drainage basin of Lake Rukwa in Tanzania.
The north of Zambia is very flat with broad plains. In the west the most notable being the Barotse Floodplain on the Zambezi.
In Eastern Zambia the plateau which extends between the Zambezi and Lake Tanganyika valleys is tilted upwards to the north, and so rises imperceptibly from about 900 m (2,953 ft) in the south to 1,200 m (3,937 ft) in the centre, reaching 1,800 m (5,906 ft) in the north near Mbala.
These plateau areas of northern Zambia have been categorised by the World Wildlife Fund as a large section of the Central Zambezian Miombo woodlands ecoregion.
The capital city is Lusaka, in the southcentral part of Zambia.
The population is concentrated mainly around Lusaka in the south and the Copperbelt Province to the northwest, the core economic hubs of the country.
The Lusaka – Livingstone Road or Livingstone Road is the main highway of the Southern Province of Zambia from the capital, Lusaka, to the principal tourist destination, Livingstone.
The highway starts 55 km south of Lusaka, just across the Kafue Bridge, turning off the Great North Road, historically once seen as part of a Cape to Cairo Road, which comes up from the border town of Chirundu and Harare in Zimbabwe.
Because the latter route is the road to the south, the Livingstone road has never been widely called the "Great South Road" in the style of its north, east and west counterparts.
It is a magnificent scenic road with views throughout.
